Jen's Note: This week, my parents traveled to town from Durango, Colorado. When they're here, we enjoy trying new restaurants and finding new things to do in the Greater Phoenix Metro Area. We typically visit the same two or three restaurants in Goodyear each time they visit. As a Goodyear resident, I'm so happy to offer them more choices. We all love breweries and chose to try out the Saddle Mountain Brewing Company which opened last week. It was a hit! My husband is a pilot and the brewery's aviation theme caught our attention... so I did some digging. I'm honored to bring this fascinating Q&A about Saddle Mountain Brewing Company to you. A special "THANK YOU" to owner Laura Hansen for a quick reply!
Laura and Jacob Hansen opened their brewery in Goodyear after selling a small town. That's right! They owned and operated five small commercial aspects of a town called Wintersburg, Arizona. No, they did not own the nuclear power plants. But Laura did build and open Tin Top Bar and Grill in 2002.
Jacob has been a home brewer for 16 years. Together, they decided the best way to advertise his craft beer would be to open a restaurant which included a brewery. The name of his craft beer? "Taildragger." Here's why... |
Q. How did you decide to open in Goodyear?
A. We are west siders and really wanted to keep the new adventure close to home. We looked everywhere and decided that Goodyear would be the best place. Unfortunately Goodyear's city ordinances did not allow for micro breweries. We worked with the city and happily 9 months later new ordinances were put into place.
Q. We love the flying theme! What is your affiliation with aviation?
A. My husband is a pilot and has work in the industry for the past 25 years. He is currently a FAA safety inspector. His love of aircraft and his country started at a very young age and grows stronger all the time. His dream is to own his own Stearman (taildragger).
Q. How did you decide on what to offer on the menu?
A. We are avid cooks and enjoy entertaining. we love what we eat at home and so we brought our kitchen to the public. We will be offering specials on a regular basis as soon as we get the current menu and it's offerings well established.
Q. What makes your restaurant stand out?
A. We believe in the ability to make what you want from the life you live and this is our tribute to that notion. We believe that our country and its heroes are the best in the world and we want to honor them with our craft beer. We will be giving a portion of our profits to military and first responder charities. Our restaurant is a vintage industrial theme with an emphasis on the 1940's and 1950's WWII aircraft, with the Stearman being the top of the top.
Q. Are you enthusiastic about Spring Training and PIR in town to help attract customers?
A. We are very excited about spring training and the PIR season.

We are happy to bring a mom and pop place to the Goodyear area. There are so very few of them. We hope to grow and add to the employment of the area and be around for a good long time. ~Laura Hansen, Saddle Mountain Brewing Company Owner

REVIEWS FROM JEN'S FAMILY
Bernice (Jen's mom): "I like the pizza a lot. I liked the waitress. She handled the crowd well and smiled a lot. The beer was good!"
Gary (Jen's dad): "I liked everything. The pizza's good. The Taildragger's Tuskegee Red Tails Red Ale reminded me of Steamwork's award-winning 'Lizard Head Red' in Durango, Colorado." Jim (Jen's husband): "I liked the Taildragger's Ray's Gold IPA. We'll definitely be going back to enjoy some more taildraggers." Jen: "Loved it. I'm so happy we have an additional dining choice in Goodyear! Fingers crossed for Spring Training and PIR to help keep this business open. My husband and I split a club sandwich on naan flat bread. We also enjoyed the beer sampler... and I enjoyed the Taildragger's Chasing Tail Amber Ale!" |
